This edition of Frieze London moved away from bold, attention-grabbing statements, favouring smaller, more intimate works.

Arguably the most influential contemporary art event of the year, Art Basel’s sheer size and breadth is impressive; 2023’s edition attracted 284 galleries from 36 countries and territories, showing artworks across all media, from painting to digital.

While the crowds were back to pre-pandemic numbers at this year’s contemporary art fair Frieze London, last year’s rejection of the brash and the shocking in favour of something gentler and more personal seems to have stuck. The dial remains firmly turned to commerciality, rather than shock and awe.
